Irish Great War Society The Society was formed in 1999 and at that, formed as part of the Great War Society in the United Kingdom. It was formed by like minded people, mainly from military backgrounds from both British and Irish armed forces. Our members are from all over the island of Ireland and we regularly attend venues on both sides of the border, as well as in other parts of the U.K. |

About Me
My interest in the Great War is derrived from my family history research and the discovery that my paternal grandfather and two maternal cousins (brothers) were all killed in action in the 'war to end all wars'. I spent nearly three years researching and writing a history of my grandfather's life and experiences on the western front, which led to a wider interest in that conflict. Have only been on one battlefield / CWGC tour in France and Flanders but would like to one day follow in my grandfather's footsteps (not literally!!) by travelling the route he trod from Artois to Picardy and Pas de Calais. Joined the IGWS just to take photos and videos in April 2010, but have somehow become more involved... (much more involved!) and enjoying every single minute of it!! My main hobbies are genealogy, military history & photography.

About Me
Interested in all things military especially Irish regiments in WW1 and the Royal Munster Fusiliers above all, due to my grandfather and great grandfather who served. Also my Great Grand Uncle who was a major in the Royal Flying Corps and later a Colonel in the Irish Free State.Archaeologist and amateur military historian as well as being an avid colllector. Having served as a CPO in the Naval Service Reserve and now as a serving member of the Reserve as a CS. Headstone is that of Josh Honan who went ashore with the Canadians on D-Day at Juno Beach , minus 10. That means he was gone ashore ten minutes ahead of the main assault force to disarm the mines. Two survived from Josh's landing craft. He was also an instructor at the Military College in the Curragh before he joined the Canadians during the war.RIP, Brian. |

About Me
Originally from the UK, moved to Irish Republic in 2008 and live in Donabate. Interest in the Great War stems from discovering that my Gt. Uncle was KIA at Passchendaele. Main interest is in researching the men who fought, both from where I lived in the UK and now in the Donabate area. Love visiting the battlefields, but so far have only done the Western Front. |
