About Me

 Irish Great War Society

The Society was formed in 1999 and at that, formed as part of the Great War Society in the United Kingdom. It was formed by like minded people, mainly from military backgrounds from both British and Irish armed forces.

Our members are from all over the island of Ireland and we regularly attend venues on both sides of the border, as well as in other parts of the U.K.

About Me

My interest in the Great War is derrived from my family history research and the discovery that my paternal grandfather and two maternal cousins (brothers) were all killed in action in the 'war to end all wars'.   I spent nearly three years researching and writing a history of my grandfather's life and experiences on the western front, which led to a wider interest in that conflict.

Have only been on one battlefield / CWGC  tour in France and Flanders but would like to one day follow in my grandfather's footsteps (not literally!!) by travelling the route he trod from Artois to Picardy and Pas de Calais.

Joined the IGWS just to take photos and videos in April 2010, but have somehow become more involved... (much more involved!) and enjoying every single minute of it!!

My main hobbies are genealogy, military history & photography.

About Me

Originally from the UK, moved to Irish Republic in 2008 and live in Donabate.

Interest in the Great War stems from discovering that my Gt. Uncle was KIA at Passchendaele.

Main interest is in researching the men who fought, both from where I lived in the UK and now in the Donabate area.

Love visiting the battlefields, but so far have only done the Western Front.

About Me

I'm a framer, mainly of militaria. I'm also a collector of cap badges.

I have a special interest in the Irish badges (its in the genes, gran'dad was a Murphy from the Republic!)

I have put together a display of Fusilier Regiments already and i want to expand this to include the Irish with some shamrock. I also have a good display of Britsh head gear under an acrylic cube.

If you would like to see any of these items, just email me and i''l attach some and return.

I have been intrested in the Great War since I was able to read, my grandfather had a collection of books on the war and I suppose i got interested through looking at the pictures in them. I try to get to France every year for July 1st and on 3 occasions I have laid wreathes at Lochmagar to remember the dead of Athy and South Kildarehe

About Me

Greetings My interest in this web site stems from my interest in collecting old photographs. I have a photo album from WW1 which was given to me by Tommy Byers who was in WW1 back in 1976. Tommy was a resident of our family rest home. Tommy was in the 9th Bn Black Watch Royal Highlanders during the war. Tommy gave me his photo album which he had collected photos during the war and has 300 images in this beautiful album which I have cherished ever since he had given it to me. Now I am doing research and a lot of it. Most of the photos are named and dated from 1909 to 1919. I hope to share the images with the world so that other people can gain some knowledge of WW1.
